Medicare Supplement Overview

A Medicare Supplement policy, also known as a Medigap policy, is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to help fill the "gaps" left behind by Original Medicare.

If you are in the Original Medicare Program and have a Medigap policy, then Medicare and your Medigap policy will both pick up their share of the covered health care costs.

Multiple companies are available in each state, such as AARP, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Mutual of Omaha and more.  Enter your zip code to see the lowest priced options in your area.

The Standard Medigap Insurance Policies

Insurance companies are only able to sell you a Standardized Medigap Insurance policy*. These Medigap policies all have specific benefits which makes them much easier to compare.

The 12 different standardized Medigap policies are labeled Plans A - L. These 12 Standardized Medigap policies must follow State and Federal laws which are designed to protect the consumer. A Medigap policy must be clearly identified by each carrier as Medicare Supplement Insurance. Each of the plans, A - L, have a different set of basic and extra benefits.

It is very important that you compare Medigap policies because costs will vary. By law, the benefits of each Medigap Plan A - L are the same for every insurance company but each company decides which Medigap policies it would like to sell.
